The Courtship . . . According to Kim

Picture
We met at One, a new church plant in Allen, TX. Willie was a part of the original launch team that transitioned from Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship to Allen with Pastor Conway, Pastor KC and their families. I joined the church 5 months later and was placed on the Guest Services team - the same team Willie was on.

Although we worked in ministry together, we didn't really have any type of relationship and only saw each other at church, ministry meetings, and singles events. Even then, we didn't really say more than hi or bye.

At the end of the summer, after one of Willie's flag football games, some friends decided to go out for a movie later that evening. After the movie, we all went to Cuba Libre for dinner and at this dinner was the first time Willie and I really had a one-on-one conversation and that conversation started to make me notice Willie in a new light. I was now interested in who Willie was.

For months, we continued not really speaking outside of church and ministry, and around the end of November, Willie started texting and calling, wanting to know more about me. After a few conversations, I was like "These aren't questions you ask just anyone" and I began to feel as if Willie was interested in me too. We continued to talk and get to know each other by phone.

Around the end of January, Willie asked if we could meet up at Starbucks. We went to Starbucks and it was packed, so we ended up a Potbelly's next door. I was so incredibly nervous. Even though I felt as if I knew what was about to transpire, I didn't want to have my hopes up and that not be the case. Willie proceded to tell me that he had been observing me for the last couple of months and talked to some friends who were close to me and saw qualities in me that he wanted in a wife. He was interested in pursuing a courtship with me with the intention of marriage, but he wanted to give me time to observe him first and see if I was willing to pursue the same goal.

At that time, I was thinking, um . . . marriage . . . I'm not sure. I didn't really know him like that, but I had already been observing him since August, and knew he was a great guy. This was the first time I was approached by a man with set direction for the relationship he wanted to pursue with me. Anyway, I took the next couple of weeks to pray and seek guidance from God and from those closest to myself and Willie. Needless to say, I was willing to go on this journey with him, and on February 12, 2009, the courtship officially began!

The Proposal . . . According to Willie

On October 10th, Kim's friend, Idara picked her up for a day of hanging out and shopping. Afterwards, she took her to Starbucks and walked across to a fountain in front of the shopping center. Kim was suspicious, but she didn't know that I was looking out from the windows of Pei Wei. Idara gave the cue for my arrival by getting Kim to bow her head in prayer and placing her hand on her back.

So, while they were praying, I walked up with our friend Tasha singing "The One He Kept for Me." Kim opened her eyes, turned around, and saw Tasha and started "balling/crying" as she realized what was happening. Kim obviously knew I was behind her, but was still crying with her back to me, and wouldn't turn around. So, I walked up to her, to turn her around, and proceeded to propose to her. She didn't really get a word out, but in the midst of crying, managed to nod her head, YES!!!

We walked to the car to go to dinner, but in the car, Kim asked me "what did I say." Apparently, she couldn't remember anything from all the crying. And guess what, I couldn't remember either. After updating our facebook status, we drove to Macaroni Grill for dinner. We walked in, and I asked for the party for Willie, not knowing the difference between party and table, so that made Kim suspicious again. We walked to the room in the back, and many of our friends and church family were awaiting our arrival. I walked in first, they yelled "surprise," and Kim turned her back and started crying again. As everyone congratulated us, I let Kim know there was one more surprise, and in walks her god-sister, Christina and her husband.

I was so thankful to pull it all off and relieved to have it all over. We enjoyed dinner with the people who have been supporting, praying for, and loving us throughout our courtship. And, the engagement begins.........YESSS SIRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Our friend, Justin, did an awesome job of capturing pictures from the proposal. He really went above and beyond when he compiled them into a video. Thanks so much, Justin!
